DC 9 Endorses Andrea Gordillo #1 for City Council in Competitive District Race

First-time candidate earns backing of major labor union ahead of early voting in Manhattan

New York, NY. – District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades has formally endorsed Andrea Gordillo for New York City Council District 2, ranking her #1 in the race. The endorsement marks a key milestone for Gordillo’s campaign, underscoring her appeal among organized labor and working-class voters.

DC 9 represents thousands of union painters, glaziers, and allied trades workers across New York City. The Council’s endorsement of Gordillo, who currently serves as Chair of Manhattan Community Board 3 and is running to represent a district that spans the East Village, Gramercy, Kips Bay, and Greenwich Village, shows her momentum days before polls open for Early Voting.

Gordillo, known for her decade-long community leadership in the East Village and tenure as Chair of Manhattan Community Board 3, expressed gratitude and excitement for the union’s support: “I’m honored to receive the endorsement of DC9—a union known not just for their strength and solidarity, but for their commitment to justice and dignity for working people. As a daughter of immigrants who achieved their dreams through hard work, I’m determined to fight tirelessly to ensure Manhattan remains a place where working families can thrive, not merely survive. Together, we’ll bridge the gap between the vibrant legacy of our community and the promising future we must build for everyone.”

In announcing their endorsement, Davon Lomax, DC9 Political Director, said, “Andrea Gordillo embodies exactly what working families in Manhattan need—fresh leadership that genuinely understands and advocates for the daily struggles of hardworking New Yorkers. Our members know firsthand how deeply housing affordability, economic fairness, and resilient infrastructure matter in their everyday lives. Andrea’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights, preserving affordability, and ensuring good union jobs makes her the ideal candidate to represent District 2. Our members trust Andrea to fight for them at City Hall, and we’re excited to elect a champion for workers and families.”

The endorsement comes as early voting begins in the June 2025 Democratic Primary. Gordillo is one of several candidates running for the open District 2 seat. DC 9’s backing adds to her growing coalition of grassroots supporters, tenants, and cultural workers, including: Latino Victory Fund, The New Majority NYC, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, NYU College Democrats, and Eleanor’s Legacy. She has also been co-endorsed by Run for Something and Democratic Municipal Officials, and has received ranked endorsements from Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, the Working Families Party, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), UAW Region 9A, CIR/SEIU, RWDSU Local 338, Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa, Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, Councilmember Alexa Avilés, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, CODA, Downtown Women for Change, and JFREJ.
